PIT Passenger Traffic Report For October 2012

PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2012

PITTSBURGH, PA (December 14, 2012) – Five airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) show a year-over-year increase in passenger traffic for October, according to the Scheduled Airline Traffic Report prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Delta (13.9 percent), United (5.6 percent), AirTran (9.3 percent), Frontier (18.3 percent), and Air Canada (4.4 percent) all reported increases.

Delta (148,900 passengers in October 2012/130,715 in October 2011) was the second largest carrier at the airport for the month, just behind US Airways (178,020/189,331; 6.0 percent decrease), and accounted for 20.8 percent share of the passengers, while US Airways’ share was 24.8 percent. Scheduled passenger traffic at the airport dropped 1.6 percent in October 2012 compared to October 2011.

A total of 716,957 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport for the month, compared to 728,441 scheduled passengers in October 2011 (716,957/728,441; 1.6 percent decrease).

A contributing factor is super storm Sandy which struck the eastern seaboard from October 29 to 31, resulting in closed airports and hundreds of canceled flights. Pittsburgh International Airport, once again, served as the safe port in the storm. During the course of the storm, four airlines repositioned more than 20 aircraft at PIT. The Allegheny County Airport Authority uses the latest in weather forecasting technology, operations preplanning with the airlines and FAA air traffic controllers to keep the airport open and operating in all weather conditions.

Year-to-date figures show that five airlines have seen an increase in traffic in 2012: Delta (2.1 percent), United (1.5 percent), American (0.9 percent), JetBlue (11.7 percent), and Air Canada (1.0 percent). Overall, year-to-date scheduled passenger totals show traffic down 3.3 percent (6,738,178/6,971,151).
