PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY 2011

  • Scheduled Passenger traffic up 8.7 percent; 10 airlines report increases in traffic

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 9, 2010) – Passenger traffic is up 8.7 percent with ten airlines reporting increases at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) in January 2011 compared to January 2010 according to the January 2011 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

A total of 592,810 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in January 2011, an 8.7 percent increase compared to January 2010 (592,810 in January 2011/545,243 in January 2010; 8.7 percent increase). It was the busiest January at the airport since 2008 when 644,957 passengers traveled at the airport.

JetBlue, with service to New York (JFK) and Boston from Pittsburgh, showed the largest percentage-based growth for the month reporting a 43.3 percent increase in passengers (19,232/13,417; 43.3 percent). JetBlue increased flights to Boston from one to three since 2010.

Other airlines to show increases are US Airways (159,872/147,207; 8.6 percent), Southwest (116,172/104,079; 11.6 percent); Delta (90,870/84,437; 7.6 percent); United (58,049/50,941; 14.0 percent); American (39,257/30,495; 28.7 percent); Continental (37,204/34,928; 6.5 percent); Skywest (4,345/4,220; 3.0 percent); Air Canada (3,103/2,247; 38.1 percent); Myrtle Beach Direct Air (268/189; 41.8 percent). AirTran, which has grown to the fourth largest airline in terms of passengers at the airport, reported an 11.7 percent decrease in traffic (59,820/67,779; 11.7 percent). Frontier, which previously operated as Midwest, reported a 38.2 decline in traffic (3,279/5,304; 38.2 percent).

“This is the tenth consecutive month traffic has increased at Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director and CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. “Our fares continue to be lower than the national average and we have more airline choices for travelers.”
