PITTSBURGH, PA (June 9, 2011) – Passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.flypittsburgh.com) grew by 2.0 percent as nine airlines reported positive gains according to the April 2011 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. It is the 13th consecutive month passenger traffic has increased at the airport.

Nine airlines reported an increase in passengers in April 2011 compared to April 2010, as a total of 680,604 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport for the month, compared to April 2010, which had a total of 667,372 passengers (680,604 passengers in April 2011/667,372 passengers in April 2010; 2.0 percent increase).

“We are realizing an increase in flights at Pittsburgh International Airport due to the increased demand from the origination traffic. Our fares are lower and passengers are taking advantage of all the options offered by our airlines,” said Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director/CEO, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

Southwest (133,511/122,581; 8.9 percent) reported an increase of close to 11,000 passengers while American (48,669/38,653; 25.9 percent) reported an increase of more than 10,000 passengers. Other airlines that reported gains were: Delta (118,374/115,524; 2.5 percent), United (64,696/63,027; 2.6 percent), Continental (40,271/38,922; 3.5 percent), JetBlue (17,731/16,392; 8.2 percent), Skywest (6,405/5,837; 9.7 percent), Air Canada (3,161,/2,549; 24.0 percent) and Myrtle Beach Direct Air (2,151/1,757; 22.4 percent).

US Airways, which is the largest airline in terms of passengers at the airport, reported a 6.4 percent decrease in traffic (163,268/174,385; 6.4 percent). AirTran (78,775/81,479; 3.3 percent), and Frontier (3,592/6,266; 42.7 percent), which previously operated as Midwest, also reported decreases in traffic.

Year-to-date totals show scheduled traffic up 5.8 percent (2,525,819/2,386,398; 5.8 percent). US Airways (656,008/644,116; 1.8 percent), Southwest (494,489/441,577; 12.0 percent), and Delta (406,717/391,690; 3.8 percent), the top three airlines in terms of numbers of passengers at the airport, have all reported increases in traffic for 2011.

Travelers Advisory: With increased traffic and the heavy summer travel months just ahead, the Allegheny County Airport Authority is reminding travelers to arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport at least 90 minutes to two hours before the scheduled departure of their flight.

The Airport Authority reports that there are two security checkpoints at Pittsburgh International Airport. The Main Checkpoint -- on the Transit Level of the Landside Terminal – is open 24 hours, while the Alternate Checkpoint – located just outside of the Ticketing Level of the Landside Terminal – is open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
