Allegheny County Airport Celebrates 75 Year Anniversary by Hosting Paper Airplane Contest

WEST MIFFLIN, PA (August 29, 2006) – On Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10, 2006, the Allegheny County Airport Authority is hosting a spectacular two-day air fair to celebrate the Allegheny County Airport’s 75th year as the premier aviation airport in Pennsylvania. As part of the festivities, the airport will be holding a paper airplane contest.

Sponsored by Corporate Air, this special contest offers local children an exciting opportunity to explore the world of flight and test their paper airplane building skills. The paper airplane contests will be held at 11:30 am on both days of the event, Saturday, September 9, and Sunday, September 10, in front of the terminal building at the Allegheny County Airport. The contest is free and open to all children. There will be prizes for all participants.

“We hope the public will join in for this day of creativity, camaraderie, light-hearted competition and family fun. Let your imagination take to the air on paper wings!” said Kent G. George, Executive Director, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

There will be two contests--one for the paper airplane with the longest time aloft and one for the paper airplane that travels the farthest distance. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of both contests in each group.

Young people in grades K-12 are invited to participate. Contestants will be assigned to a group that coincides with their school grade. The four groups will be grades, K-4, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

Contestants can enter only one paper airplane per contest. Paper airplanes are to be made from one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper prior to the event. Tape or glue is permitted on the paper airplane for adhesive purposes, but no other materials are allowed.

To register a student for the contest, please call Samantha Stedford at 412-472-3648. Be prepared to provide the following information about the contestant: name, address, age, school grade and telephone number. Prior registration is encouraged but not required. Walk-up entries will be welcomed.
