PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT DECEMBER 2006 PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT

 

 

 

  • AIRLINES OTHER THAN US AIRWAYS REPORT 14.2 PERCENT INCREASE

    PITTSBURGH, PA (February 9, 2007) – Airlines other than US Airways at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) reported a combined 14.2 percent increase in passengers in 2006 compared to 2005 according to the scheduled airline traffic report issued by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Eight airlines operating at the airport showed increased passenger traffic, half of which reported growth in excess of 12 percent.

    A total of 769,680 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at Pittsburgh International Airport in the month of December 2006, which brings the annual total to 9,949,049. That translates to a 4.7 percent drop in total passenger traffic for 2006 from 2005 (9,949,049/10,440,500). Compared to December 2005, passenger traffic was down 0.8 percent for the month (769,680/776,083).

    "Airlines other than US Airways account for almost 50 percent of the traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport" Allegheny County Airport Authority Executive Director Kent G. George said. "The numbers continue to reflect the shift to more passengers originating and ending their travel in Pittsburgh – a trend that has occurred since fares have become more competitive and US Airways has reduced its hub operations. As a result, area residents are able to enjoy inexpensive travel with many choices of carriers.”

    JetBlue also began service at the airport in 2006. The airline, which flies non-stop to New York, Boston and connects to many more destinations, reported a total of 128,665 passengers from when it began service on June 30 through December.

    The biggest winners at the airport, however, were eight airlines that showed remarkable growth, led by Southwest, Midwest and Continental.

    For December 2006, six airlines showed an increase compared to December 2005. Southwest reported a 10.3 percent gain (87,326/79,177), Delta was up 14 percent (64,981/56,996), Northwest increased 11.4 percent (43,344/38,895), Continental grew 34.7 percent (39,819/29,568), American showed a 23.2 percent gain (36,393/29,548) and Midwest increased 7.2 percent (6,872/6,408).
