PIT Passenger Traffic Report For September 2013


  • More flights and seats available in September 2013 compared to last year
  • Five airlines report increases in traffic

PITTSBURGH, PA, (November 6, 2013) – Five airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport showed an increase in passenger traffic in September 2013 in comparison to last September according to the Pittsburgh International Airport Monthly Scheduled Airline Traffic Report.

American Airlines, which had its first full month of non-stop flights from PIT to Los Angeles (LAX), reported an increase of 13.7 percent. Other airlines that reported increases in traffic include United (4.2 percent), Southwest (2 percent), Frontier (35.2 percent), and Air Canada (1.4 percent). Frontier Airlines operates flights on behalf of Apple Vacations and also permits bookings of flights to Punta Cana and Cancun through its website.

Meanwhile, the number of departing scheduled flights for September 2013 increased 1.1 percent and the amount of departing scheduled seats available increased by 4.4 percent compared to September 2013, according to Diio, an aviation database system.

This fall, two new routes were launched at Pittsburgh International Airport including American’s LAX route and Southwest’s service to Nashville (BNA) in September. Delta Air Lines is currently accepting bookings on new nonstop Saturday-only service to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which begins December 21. Also, AirTran resumed nonstop service to Ft. Lauderdale on September 29 after a short hiatus.

Scheduled passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport decreased 1.5 percent in September 2013 compared to September 2012, as a total of 630,399 passengers traveled through the airport compared to 640,281 passengers that traveled in September 2012.

Year-to-date totals show scheduled traffic down 2.0 percent as 5,903,444 passengers have traveled at Pittsburgh International Airport through September 2013 compared to 6,021,221. United (2.4 percent); AirTran (12.6 percent); American (4.1 percent) and Air Canada (0.1 percent) have shown increases in year-over-year scheduled traffic.
