PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR MAY 2013
- Departing flights and seats increased by 0.9 and 4.2 percent
- American upgrades aircraft to Chicago and will add nonstop to Los Angeles in August
(PITTSBURGH, PA) August 7, 2013 – Passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) remained essentially the same in May 2013 compared to May 2012, as a total of 708,728 passengers traveled through the airport this May. This is an increase of 78 passengers from the 708,650 that traveled in May 2012, according to the monthly passenger traffic report prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Additionally, the number of departing scheduled flights for May 2013 increased by 0.9 percent and the amount of departing scheduled seats available increased by 4.2 percent compared to May 2012, according to Diio, an aviation database system.
Two airlines showed an increase in percentage of passengers in comparison to last May’s totals. AirTran had the highest percentage-based increase. The airline reported an increase of 36.1 percent passengers (77,508 passengers in May 2013/56,959 passengers in May 2012). United also reported increases in traffic (125,244/123,037; 1.8 percent).
Upcoming air service changes include American Airlines upgrading its aircraft on its Pittsburgh-Chicago route and launching new daily nonstop Pittsburgh to Los Angeles August 27. Southwest will add new service to Nashville in September. Delta Airlines will add Saturday only nonstop service from Pittsburgh to two Caribbean destinations, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Nassau, Bahamas on December 21, 2013.
Year-to-date totals show traffic down 1.8 percent as 3,138,775 passengers have traveled at Pittsburgh International Airport through May 2013 compared to 3,195,768 (3,138,775/3,195,768/1.8 percent). United (523,839/505,223; 3.7 percent); AirTran (374,799/313,262; 19.6 percent); American (241,990/237,619; 1.8 percent), and Air Canada (16,858/16,788; 0.4 percent) have shown increases.
