PITTSBURGH, PA (July 6, 2011) – Scheduled passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) increased for the 14th consecutive month as traffic grew 4.7 percent in May 2011. Year-to-date, scheduled passenger totals show traffic up 5.6 percent, compared to January through May 2010.
Eight airlines reported an increase in passengers in May 2011 compared to May 2010 according to the May 2011 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. A total of 742,330 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in May 2011, a 4.7 percent increase compared to May 2010 (742,330 in May 2011/709,212 in May 2010; 4.7percent).
Totals through May show that there have been 52,605 commercial operations this year, compared to 48,257 through May 2011. Additionally, commercial operations were up 9.6 percent in May 2011 (11,237/10,257; 9.6 percent).
American showed one of the largest percentage-based growths for the month reporting a 23.7 percent increase in passengers (52,737/42,643; 23.7 percent). Delta (135,345/123,106; 9.9 percent) and Southwest (139,539/129,792; 7.5 percent) also both showed an increase of nearly 10,000 passengers.
Factors that influenced the growth include American Airlines adding flights and increasing the size of the aircraft to Dallas/Ft. Worth. Demand for travel to Dallas and connections to destinations in Oklahoma and Texas are due primarily to business travel related to the energy industry.
Delta added a new route to Boston with three flights a day beginning in April 2011. Since May 2010, Delta has added 33 flights per week at Pittsburgh International Airport. Southwest Airlines increased its Pittsburgh to Philadelphia flights from four to six per day.
