PITTSBURGH, PA (September 10, 2013) – Two airlines showed an increase in percentage of passengers in comparison to last June’s totals. AirTran had the highest percentage-based increase. The airline reported an increase of 20.1 percent passengers (74,354 passengers in June 2013/61,925 passengers in June 2012). United also reported increases in traffic (130,875/128,408; 1.9 percent).

The number of departing scheduled flights for June 2013 increased by 1.4 percent and the amount of departing scheduled seats available increased by 4.8 percent compared to June 2012, according to Diio, an aviation database system.

The new Nashville service is a trend of new flights in 2013 including Houston Hobby and West Palm Beach on Southwest Airlines earlier this year, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Cancun, Mexico and Nassau, Bahamas Saturday-only nonstop service on Delta Air Lines beginning December 21 from Pittsburgh to the two Caribbean destinations. Additionally, American Airlines has upgraded its aircraft on its Pittsburgh-Chicago route and launched new daily nonstop Pittsburgh to Los Angeles on August 27.

Passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport decreased 1.9 percent in June 2013 compared to June 2012, as a total of 725,944 passengers traveled through the airport compared to 740,113 passengers that traveled in June 2012, according to the monthly passenger traffic report prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

Year-to-date totals show traffic down 1.8 percent as 3,864,719 passengers have traveled at Pittsburgh International Airport through June 2013 compared to 3,935,881 (3,864,719/3,935,881; 1.8 percent). United (654,714/633,716; 3.3 percent); AirTran (449,153/375,187; 19.7 percent); and American (295,901/292,406; 1.2 percent) have also shown increases in traffic.
