PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JUNE-JULY 2008
  • Eight airlines report increased traffic
  • Pittsburgh fares below the national average again
  • Discount Fares Newsletter subscriber base continues to grow
PITTSBURGH, PA (September 4, 2008) – Combined traffic for 12 of the 13 airlines serving Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) increased by 3.0 percent in July 2008 compared to July 2007, according to the July 2008 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared for the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Year-to-date figures show those same airlines have reported a 10.5 percent increase in traffic through July 2008 compared to July 2007.

The 12 airlines – AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, Southwest, Midwest, Myrtle Beach Direct Air, JetBlue, Air Canada, and USA3000 – had a total of 555,651 passengers at Pittsburgh International Airport in July 2008 compared to 539,283 passengers in July 2007, a 3.0 percent increase (555,651/539,283). Year-to-date the 12 airlines have reported a total of 3,474,637 passengers compared to 3,143,372 passengers through July 2007, which is a 10.5 percent increase (3,474,637/3,143,372; 10.5 percent).

Eight airlines showed an increase in passenger traffic in July 2008 compared to July 2007, led by Delta Airlines, which reported a 13.0 percent increase (93,538/84,580; 13.0 percent) and was followed by United (78,435/71,981; 9.0 percent), Continental (50,978/44,424; 14.8 percent); Northwest (49,317/45,963; 7.3 percent), AirTran (44,363/42,308; 4.9 percent), USA3000 (21,651/16,822; 28.7 percent); Myrtle Beach Direct Air (5,037/3,637; 38.5 percent); and Air Canada (4,352/4,021; 8.2 percent).

Of special note, the average fare at Pittsburgh International Airport is below the national average based on reports of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The average domestic round trip fare in Pittsburgh for the first quarter of 2008 is $304.58, compared to the national average of $331.72. Pittsburgh airfares are lower than most airports including Cincinnati, Washington Dulles, Reagan National, Charlotte, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Columbus. Since 2001, the average fare at Pittsburgh International Airport has dropped by 24.1 percent.

Additionally, the passenger traffic that begins and ends in Pittsburgh continues to increase driven by lower fares and quality airport amenities such as access to plenty of low-cost on-site parking, the shops and dining options of the AIRMALL, free wi-fi, and an excellent on-time departure rate.

The Discount Fares E-newsletter is boasting 37,000 subscribers (sign-up available at www.FlyPittsburgh.com) and that number is growing every day, a clear indication that travelers are very interested in the best deals for air travel.

A total of 823,510 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in July 2008, a 10.4 percent decrease compared to July 2007 (823,510/919,301; 10.4 percent) as those gains were not enough to offset the losses in traffic posted by US Airways (267,859/380,018; 29.5 percent); Southwest (134,362/139,134; 3.4 percent); American (41,961/44,480; 5.7percent); JetBlue (21,300/29,243; 27.2 percent) and Midwest (8,357/12,690; 34.1 percent).

Year-to-date figures show traffic behind the pace of 2007. Through the first seven months of 2008, traffic is 11.4 percent lower than the same time period in 2007 (5,203,935/5,876,573; 11.4 percent). The Allegheny County Airport Authority had anticipated the drop in passengers by US Airways as the airline shifted connecting traffic to other hubs earlier in the year. To compensate for this loss, the Airport Authority continues to seek ways to keep operating costs low while also maintaining a world class facility.

June Passenger Traffic:
In June 2008, the same 12 of 13 airlines reported a total of 555,266 passengers compared to 523,611 passengers in June 2007, a 6.0 percent increase (555,266/523,611; 6.0 percent). Eight airlines showed an increase in passenger traffic in June 2008 compared to June 2007, led by Delta Airlines, which reported a 12.8 percent increase (93,896/83,212; 12.8 percent) and was followed by United (75,351/71,472; 5.4 percent), Continental (51,609/43,317; 19.1 percent); Northwest (51,152/45,331; 12.8 percent), AirTran (40,925/36,761; 11.3 percent), USA3000 (19,921/14,290; 39.4 percent); Myrtle Beach Direct Air (4,665/2,915; 60.0 percent); and Air Canada (4,217/3,877; 8.8 percent).

A total of 808,528 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in June 2008, a 14.6 percent decrease compared to June 2007 (808,528/946,379; 14.6 percent) as those gains were not enough to offset the losses in traffic posted by US Airways (253,262/422,768; 40.1 percent); Southwest (142,589/143,550; 0.7 percent); American (40,789/41,537; 1.8 percent); JetBlue (20,853/27,774; 24.9 percent) and Midwest (9,299/9,575; 2.9 percent).
