PITTSBURGH, PA (July 5, 2006) – Southwest Airlines has soared to second place in terms of number of passengers in just one year of operations at Pittsburgh International Airport according to the May 2006 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report issued by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Southwest reported a total of 102,308 passengers in May 2006, a 78.7 percent increase compared to May 2005, the airline’s first month in operation at Pittsburgh International Airport. That total number of passengers is the second largest of any carrier at the airport and accounts for 11.7 percent of the total traffic for May 2006. US Airways is the largest carrier at the airport. The airline reported 472,293 passengers in May 2006, a drop of 19.3 percent compared to May 2005 (472,293 in May 2006/584,900 in May 2005; 19.3 percent decrease). Still, 54.1 percent of the passengers at Pittsburgh International Airport in May 2006 were US Airways customers. “The Airport Authority is happy to see the success Southwest is enjoying. We wish more of the same for newcomer JetBlue Airways. The addition of low cost carriers like AirTran Airways and USA 3000 Airlines spark competition and stimulate airline ticket sales. As a result, the fares at the airport continue to drop and the number of originating passengers continues to grow. The traveler with more choices and better prices is the biggest winner,” Kent G. George, Allegheny County Airport Authority Executive Director said. In addition to Southwest, five other airlines reported an increase in traffic in May 2006 compared to May 2005: Midwest (8,168/4,394; 85.9 percent increase), Air Canada (3,290/2,158; 52.5) Continental (39,947/28,506; 40.1), Northwest (51,178/43,258; 18.3) and American (35,622/35,007; 1.8). A total of 872,778 scheduled passengers traveled through Pittsburgh International Airport in May 2006 – which is an 8.6 decrease compared to May 2005 (872,778/955,016).
