PITTSBURGH, PA (March 9, 2007) – Total scheduled passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) increased 2.8 percent in January 2007, the second time in three months the number has shown an increase at the airport according to the January 2007 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. A total of 711,089 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in January 2007, a 2.8% increase over January 2006 (711,089/691,909). US Airways & US Airways Express combined traffic is down 7.9% (357,761 passengers in January 2007/388,583 passengers in January 2006), while all other scheduled carriers combined are up 16.5% (353,328/303,326). Seven airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport showed an increase in passenger traffic in January 2007, with five of those airlines reporting increases of more than 10 percent. Leading the gainers was Continental, which showed a 34.8% increase (35,340/26,217; 34.8). Northwest picked up 20.2% more passengers (38,922/32,382; 20.2), and American increased 19.3% (32,697/27,411). Those three airlines were followed by Southwest (76,967/67,988; 13.2%), Delta (58,230/51,625; 12.8%) and Midwest (5,836/5,430; 7.5%). “Traffic is up and fares are down,” said Kent G. George, Executive Director of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. “We are going to new destinations with Delta’s service to Salt Lake City and Myrtle Beach Direct Air & Tours launch to Myrtle Beach. On Monday, Southwest adds Baltimore. With the increased competition we have some of the best fares among the Top 40 Airports in the country.” According to the United States Department of Transportation, Pittsburgh International Airport ranks in a tie at 13th for the lowest airfares among the top 40 airports in the country, ranked among total passengers. The average fare in 2006 at Pittsburgh International Airport was $139, the same as Raleigh Durham International Airport, while Nashville International Airport is 12th at $133 and Philadelphia International Airport is 15th at $140.
