August 2006 Passenger Traffic Report for Pittsburgh International AirportOctober 13, 2006 AUGUST 2006 PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
PITTSBURGH, PA (October 13, 2006) – Six airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport showed an increase in passenger traffic in August according to the August 2006 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Five of those six airlines showed growth of more than 14 percent. Southwest Airlines reported almost 41,000 more passengers in August 2006 compared to August 2005, for an increase of 61.7 percent (106,686 in August 2006/ 65,985 in August 2005, 61.7 percent). Since launching service in May of 2005, the Texas-based airline has quickly become the airport’s second-leading carrier. Year-to-date, the airline has had 766,690 passengers or an 11.41 percent share of all passengers. Southwest’s growth can be attributed to increase in service. When the airline launched service in Pittsburgh, Southwest offered four flights a day to Chicago Midway, four flights a day to Philadelphia, one flight a day to Orlando, FL, and one flight a day to Las Vegas. Currently, Southwest has six daily flights to Chicago, seven to Philadelphia, three to Orlando and two to Las Vegas. Additionally, Southwest expanded service adding a flight each to Phoenix and Tampa, in October 2005. Delta reported a slight 1.5 percent increase (66,521/65,528), while Northwest (49,087/42,778, 14.7 percent) and Continental (39,853/29,299, 36 percent) had fewer passengers but much more significant gains. Midwest (8,990/5,120 75.6 percent) and Air Canada (3,436/ 2,969 15.7 percent) also reported growth for the month. A total of 897,663 scheduled passengers traveled through the airport in August 2006 – which is a 3.9 percent decrease compared to August 2005 (897,663/ 934,412). Year-to-date scheduled airport traffic shows a 6 percent decrease (6,717,371/7,145,616). The increases reported by the six airlines helped offset the losses in passenger volume by US Airways (464,292/554,930, 16.3 percent), United (59,698/ 59,845, 0.2 percent), American (37,463/ 39,660, 5.5 percent), AirTran (27,320/ 32,365, 15.6), USA 3000 (12,778/18,831, 32.1 percent). JetBlue, which began service at Pittsburgh International Airport on June 30, 2006, reported a total of 21,539 passengers. “As more airlines show an increase in traffic, our customers are benefiting from the continued increase of competition between the airlines. As we approach the busy holiday travel season, passengers are expected to respond to more choices and better fares at Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority Executive Director Kent G.
