Airport Authority Employee Recognized By Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

  • Ed Randza named Injury Prevention Champion for his efforts in car seat program at Pittsburgh International Airport

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 12, 2013) – Ed Randza, Ground Transportation Coordinator, Allegheny County Airport Authority, has been recognized as an Injury Prevention Champion for Kids by the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Ed has been recognized for efforts in partnering with the hospital’s Child Passenger Safety program, which provides car seats to families taken by taxi to Pittsburgh International Airport.

Many times patients departing the hospital for the airport do not have car seats and the hospital provides one for them. Previously, the car seats would be either left in the cab or on the sidewalk at the airport with little hope of recovery. At $65 per seat, the program was in jeopardy.

“Prior to Ed’s assistance the car seats were often left on the sidewalk by the cab drivers and our loss was at 100 percent,” said Chris Vitale, MSN, RN, Manager – Injury Prevention, Children’s Hospital. “Ed had already been collecting and storing some of the car seats. Shortly after we picked up 65 seats Ed had rescued and since then we pick up an average of 20 car seats per month. Ed saved the program and is keeping children safe on a daily basis.”

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC recognized Ed, who has been with the ACAA since 2008 and resides in Koppel, PA, with its “Protecting Our Future” Injury Prevention award at the Allegheny County Airport Authority Board Meeting on Friday, November 8, 2013.
