ALLEGHENY COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY RELEASES ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC BENEFIT OF JETBLUE AIRWAYS ON THE REGION
PITTSBURGH, PA – Since JetBlue Airways launched air service at Pittsburgh International Airport, fares to New York and Boston have decreased dramatically and passenger volumes have soared, according to an analysis by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
When JetBlue began service in June 2006 the average fare to New York and Boston were $214 and $179 respectively. According to the latest data available from the US DOT (June 30, 2008), the average fare has dropped 48% to $112 to New York and 33% to $120 to Boston. Passenger increases are 75% to New York and 25% to Boston.
This analysis is a follow-up to a study the Airport Authority conducted in 2007 on the economic impact of low cost carriers on the Pittsburgh region.
“JetBlue brought its terrific fares and great customer service to Pittsburgh International Airport. It is vital to remind the community to fly JetBlue and the other low cost carriers if we want to keep competitive fares and more choices available, said Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director, Allegheny County Airport Authority. Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airways, USA 3000 are other low cost carriers at Pittsburgh International Airport.
Reducing the cost of flying out of Pittsburgh International Airport has been one of the primary goals of the Regional Air Service Partnership - a joint effort of Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, the Allegheny County Airport Authority, and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.
“We have been saying the discount fares of low cost carriers provide true economic benefits to the region. Lower airfares make our region competitive for retaining and locating businesses. More low cost carriers at Pittsburgh International Airport mean more travel options that save money – that helps both businesses and the local economy,” stated Glenn R. Mahone, Chairman, Allegheny County Airport Authority.
JetBlue currently offers two flights a day to New York JFK and one flight a day to Boston. Flights can be booked at www.jetblue.com.
